This trip takes you to Nyungwe forest National Park in Rwanda, probably the safari destination with the best preserved rain forest in the mountains throughout Central Africa not only acclaimed for its bio-diversity, but also for being one of the most endemic species-rich areas in all of Africa.

TRIP OVERVIEW

Nyungwe Forest National park is renowned for its 13 different primate species that almost make 25% of Africa’s total. The primates of particular interest in the forest include colonies of the common chimpanzees and the Adolf Friedrich’s Angola Columbus (Columbus angolensis Ruwenzori) which is now extinct in Angola due to the intense hunt for which they were subjected.

Others include the L’hoests, Silver Monkeys, Golden Monkeys, Hamlyn’s Monkeys, Red-tailed Monkeys that are soon facing extinction in this park and the Dent’s Monkey among others. There are also others that are shyful nocturnal such as the bush babies also known as the galago and the tail-less potto.

Nyungwe Forest is the only place in Rwanda and Uganda where you can take a Canopy walk.

TRIP OVERVIEW

Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

  • The guide will pick you for a transfer to Nyungwe Forest with a stopover at the royal King’s Palace in Nyanza for a cultural description about the history and people of Rwanda and the museum at Rwesero, reaching the park in the late afternoon.
  • Dinner and overnight at Gisakura guest House for Budget/Nyungwe forest Lodge for Luxury.

Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking

  • After a short briefing about chimpanzee tracking you will start on a search for these closest cousins to humans.
  • You will take on with you packed lunch and water since the activity sometimes lasts up to 7 hours and above.
  • You will see a lot of other primate species and birds like the Rwenzori Turacco, black and white casqued horn bill.

Day 3, Return back to Kigali

  • After breakfast, you will return back to Kigali with visiting the places you missed out while you were going to Nyungwe.
